VERWOOD TOWN 3 SWAY 3 (Verwood win on penalties)

A double whammy in the first ten minutes looked to have provided skids for our hopes of a Semi Final appearance. To make it worse we gave way for a third Sway goal with only 5 minutes left of the first half. Joe Kimber pulled one back before the referee got the whistle to his lips. 1-3.

The half wasn’t good from a football quality aspect with many passes going astray and a more physical Sway side taking first balls.

Ballard Smith and O’Hare took the brunt of central attacks and Webber and Bergin did well on the flanks.

Guthrie looked dangerous around the box but stout defending from Sway kept us at bay.

Half Time 1-3.

Guthrie took only two minutes of the re start to put his name on the score sheet with a good goal making it 2-3.

We got more into the game as the half wore on but a rugged defensive Sway kept the score line in their favour.

Frost went close followed by a great run and shot by Bergin. The Sway keeper pulled off a couple of excellent saves as we pushed on.

Dyer and Frost became more dominant in the middle of the park and from several through balls we should have scored a third but good goal keeping and narrow misses meant the half closing in on a Sway win.

Then with only a couple of minutes left O’Hare joined in attack and a half chance was tucked away for a 3-3 score line.

90 minutes 3-3

Extra time was a no prisoner 30 minutes. We had the edge but not playing to the same quality as we had been in recent matches.

We had a couple of chances but the referee’s whistle blew on the need for a penalty shoot out.

4-4. Up stepped Sway for their fifth. Over the bar. ... Silence …. Kimber didn’t dink but slammed the ball into the bottom corner. Semi Final spot now ours.

Result 3-3 but a win on penalties 5-4.
