Match Report Fawley vs Verwood Town 7-Oct-20

SYDENHAMS (WESSEX) LEAGUE DIVISION ONE
WEDNESDAY 7TH OCTOBER 2020
FAWLEY 0 VERWOOD TOWN 2

In the first minute Smith released Nicholson down the left and a great cross was punched clear as a marauding Vining closed in. Fawley hit back with a long ball down the middle but Elsom dashed hopes with a strong header.

The game see-sawed but we were playing good football on the deck and looked more threatening on goal than Fawley.

Nicholson shaved the post with a run and shot and then Zanin let Butler in for a daisy cutter as we pressed forward.

Fawley were dangerous on the break and Lynch had to make a coupe of excellent saves to keep the score board blank.

Anderton made his presence felt with a challenge in the middle of the park. The resultant free kick was dealt with by Hall.

A tussle in the middle of the park caused Cooper to receive a few words of wisdom from the ref who decided to award a free kick. Lynch went high to take a good catch.

27 minutes gone and Smith dummied his marker to give space for Vining to have a crack. The ball was hoofed off the line, Nicholson gathered the rebound and fired a low cross into the box. Vining whipped in to put us 1-0 ahead.

Watkins played in Butler for a run on goal but Fawley closed ranks to stop progress as thr ref blew for half time.

Half Time 1-0.

Smith had to come off at half time with a suspected rib injury so Joe Freak made his first appearance for the Club.

We continued where we left off - on the attack. Butler swept a wide ball to Zanin and a low cross was cleared off the post for a corner. Fawley’s defence deepened and the corner was cleared.

Fawley were dangerous on the counter and had Watkins and Lynch not been so attentive we could have suffered a leveler with tem minutes gone of the half.

Fawley grabbed more of the ball for a period and we were tested defensively. Elsom & Hall mastered their opposite numbers and a Watkins Anderton double act controlled our left hand side.

Freak was bedding in nicely and linking with Butler split the Fawley defence. The keeper was out quickly to save at feet.

17 minutes and Nicholson made way for Warren. A WD40 application and Warren joined the fray.

Handbags became the norm as the game entered its final stages.

Two minutes left and Zanin slipped past his marker to cross for Freak. Freak’s shot kicked up the back of the net 2-0.

Result 2-0.
