Match Report United Services Verwood Town vs Fleet Spurs 10-Dec-2011

SYDENHAMS (WESSEX) LEAGUE DIVISION ONE
SATURDAY 10TH DECEMBER 2011
VERWOOD TOWN 1 FLEET SPURS 0

Spurs won a free kick with only 2 minutes gone. The ball flew low past the post. It made us wake up. The dead ball kick found Homer, on to Satterley and a good cross was deflected for a corner. We cocked up in the box as the ball bounced around and no Verwood boot got near it..

It wasn't pretty football. A rugged and uncompromising Spurs defence made sure every ball was challenged for.

We broke away after one attack and Haskell was dropped just outside the box. Homer chipped the ball on to the penalty spot and Haskell followed in driving a header for the roof of the net. An agile keeper flipped the ball away.

Webb was coming into the game more and neat footwork took him clear of a sliding tackle. A cross field ball released Homer and good movement involving Gajic and Haskell gave room for a shot from Haskell. The keeper wasn't troubled at all.

Football was scrappy. There was more aerial combat than there should have been but neither side was giving ground.

39 to 42 minutes was a succession of corners that we have to defend desperately. Lynch finally made a great catch under intense pressure to stop the avalanche.

2 minutes later Satterley found a gap and a dink onto the penalty spot allowed Gajic to half volley past the keeper. 1-0.

HALF TIME 1-0

We had the edge in the first part of the second half and should have gone further ahead from a Gajic rocket but the shot as with many on the day went wide.

Delaney joined the forwards and a header from a Webb cross was flipped over the bar. Evans, giving one his top performances gave Haskell an opportunity with a great chip over the full ce3ntre half but the keeper was quickly off his line to clear.

We then lost advantage for a time as Spurs forced us back.

We defended in numbers as Spurs pressure became relentless. Lynch was our hero a couple of times with good saves but the back four steered by Kelly and Delaney were the reason we finished the game with three points.

Result 1-0.
