Match Report Verwood Town vs Cowes Sports

WESSEX LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
SATURDAY 14TH JANUARY 2017
VERWOOD TOWN 1 COWES SPORTS 2

Frankie White and Jordan Fisk made their bow in this crucial home fixture against Cowes Sports. Mike Snow stepped into the No.5 slot partnering Martin Smith because of the dreaded lurgy affecting Liam Donachy.

We settled quickly and Bergin rifled in good goal with ten minutes gone. We went close again a couple of minutes later but Cowes dug in and gradually kept our attacks pinned to the edge of their area.

A well drilled Cowes team hit back and pegged us in our half. On 34 minutes a Cowes right flank attack produced a corner and they made it 1-1 with a powerful header that gave Bennet no chance.

Dyer and Warren found themselves policed by Cowes mid field and although we made a few breaks we didn’t have the finish.

Smith and Snow were made extra busy towards the end of the half but we survived several good Cowes attacks to go in at half time 1-1.

Half Time 1-1

Only a minute had gone when a snap raid on Cowes right earned them another corner. We didn’t defend the high ball and found ourselves at 1-2 as another header beat Bennet.

We rallied. White delivered a great cross that skipped across the area with no one close enough to touch home. Then Dyer drilled a shot just wide. Warren’s through ball for Bergin gave an opening for Bergin to draw us level. It wasn’t to be. Cowes closed ranks and the opportunity had gone.

Cowes discipline was evident as they close shop. Good cover in front of the sticks and tireless running blocked what attempts we made on goal.

A flurry of activity with ten minutes left had Fisk trying a shot and another Dyer shot whistled wide of the upright.

A minute left and Bennet had to produce one of his better saves flicking the ball away from the top corner.

The whistle went on a Cowes victory and to be fair they edged the game with a disciplined and hard working display.

Result 1-2
