Match Report Verwood Town vs Blackfield 1-Mar-17

WESSEX LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
WEDNESDAY 1ST MARCH 2017
VERWOOD TOWN 0 BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY 2

Four late withdrawals along with injured Evans & Smith meant a few shuffles in formation but with a growing quality in youth from our Development Squad we were able to field a good side along with a full bench.

Although Blackfield & Langley were out of the traps quickly we matched endeavor and Bergin’s lively run down the left and cross was inches away from Fletchers size nines.

Blackfield & Langley wanted to play on the deck, it matched our style of play and turned the game into a good 90 minutes for spectators. An excellent piece of play took Blackfield & Langley to the edge of our box and a good shot brought Bennet into action.

Warren’s link alongside Donachy gave a solid feel centrally and with Elsom and Kelly taking up full back spots we looked able to cope with Blackfield & Langley’s pressure.

With 12 minutes gone a Blackfield & Langley clearance down the flank was intercepted by Elsom. A chip found Fisk. Fisk’s ball inside was picked up by Kimber, but his run on goal was stopped with a tackle felling him 20 yards out. The free kick was well taken by the keeper.

Half way through the half applied pressure from Kelly gave space and his floated ball into the area was followed in by Anderton. A powerful header went over the angle of bar and post.

Bergin had an opportunity for a shot with 10 minutes left but decided to pass across the box. The result was a big boot up field.

Half Time 0-0

Inexplicably we yielded yet again from a poor second half start. A quick run down the right, a cross half cleared and a bounce inside the area fell for a tap in. 0-1 with only 3 minutes gone.

No heads dropped. Instead it sparked activity. Fletcher almost wriggled past his marker just outside the Blackfield & Langley box but good feet retained the ball and a pass back found Bergin racing in. A pass across the box found Fisk and a low shot hit defenders and resulted in a corner. Donachy climbed higher than the rest but put the ball over the bar.

Blackfield & Langley reacted with a good move wide left. Elsom forced the ball away from the area but giving away a corner. In it came with Donachy half clearing. Kelly stepped in to finish the task.

69 minutes and Bergin made way for Simkins on a one on one. Simkins was straight into the mix closing down the ball on the edge of the Blackfield & Langley box. A snap shot went wide.

Elsom suffered a recurrence of his groin strain and had to come off giving O’Hare his debut.

72 minutes should have brought us level. Dyer’s through ball was collected by Anderton 12 yards out. Anderton rounded a marker only to hit the ball into defenders. Picking up the re bound Anderton fired another shot but this time the keeper was down to gather safely.

Blackfield & Langley made a couple of changes to formation. Pressure built up but we kept tight at the back. O’Hare did well to curb his man and slotted in well alongside Donachy Warren and Kelly.

80 minutes Blackfield & Langley hit the bar and post. Fisk replied with a mirror image of his Lymington shot hitting the bar with a volley but agonised as it whistled out of play.

A counter produced space on the edge of our area and a shot on target was brilliantly palmed away by Bennet.

91 minutes typified our season. A ball chipped into our box was policed by Donachy. A tackle on a runner blocked the shot but judged too heavy and the referee awarded a penalty. There was no mistake from the spot and the penalty gave 0-2 score line.

Result 0-2
