Match Report Downton vs Verwood Town 12-Nov-22

WESSEX LEAGUE DIVISION ONE
SATURDAY 12TH NOVEMBER 2022
DOWNTON 4 VERWOOD TOWN 0

In the first two minutes of the game, Davis headed clear a high ball into the box and a quick counter through Carswell and Joe Smith gave Burpitt a crack at the other end but the the ball whistled wide.

A quick opening and a pace that was maintained throughout the half.

Downton’s mixed football kept us on our toes. Davis and Kerr did well containing the high balls for central runners while Broad and Mason curbed two enthusiastic flanks.

A busy McWilliams sparked chances but finishing was at a premium. Joe Smith went close with a volley half way through the half but the keeper took a clean catch on the post.

Phillips got busier as Downton gained more possession. Superb handling kept the score sheet blank until 40 minutes gone and a cross from the edge of our box was deflected 0-1.

Downton pushed on. McWilliams put a shift on to track back and block a shot from the edge of the area and Storey followed up with a great tackle stopping progress into the 6 yard box.

Half Time 0-1.

We started well with a good move through Fishlock Mason and McWilliams but yet again couldn’t provide a finishing touch in the area.

We lost verve and sat back allowing space that proved punishing. Phillips was busy as Downton pushed us back.

15 minutes into the half saw a mix up in our box resulting in a well placed shot into the bottom corner. 0-2.

18 Cam Smith made an appearance with McWilliams taking a breather. Two minutes later a simple exploitation of space and went 0-3.

On 24 the ball was in the net again but this time a flag for offside saved the score board rattling. 25 Sam Farndell came on for Joe Smith.

26 a storey effort ran across the goal line. A big boot and we got caught too far upfield 0-4.

27 Harley Stock came on to give Jake Carswell a chance to get splinters.

34 Kerr made way for Towers. 38 McMonagle came on for Fishlock.

That’s was it. In the latter stages of the game we could have left all the players on but it wouldn’t have influenced the result. One of those days.

Result 0-4.
