Match Report Andover Town vs Verwood Town 08-Mar-23

WESSEX LEAGUE DIVISION ONE
SATURDAY 18TH MARCH 2023
ANDOVER TOWN 2 VERWOOD TOWN 4

Despite recent set backs we were looking forward to this game and although a couple of the squad were away we had a good mix to face Andover.

Andover’s first minute long ball was swept away by Matthews, and our counter through Carswell and Fishlock was the need for the keeper to make a good save on the post.

A good open game continued, and we deserved our lead when Carswell slammed a volley past the keeper. 0-1. Shortly after we could have had another when a header was well stopped.

However Andover’s response was immediate. No hanging about and their direct play brought a leveller 1-1

Our back line was in harmony, many breaks by Andover met the offside flag. In the first half they got the ball in the net three times - all offside .. and much to the home crowd’s frustration!!

No resting today though and certainly no lethargy. Mc Williams hit a sublime second to make it 2-1 and almost had another a couple of minutes later, as we produced some excellent attacking play.

Close on the half time whistle Joe Smith had a shot blocked on the edge of the area and Carswell’s follow up went wide.

Half Time 2-1

Storey McWilliams and Carswell engineered a move through the middle splitting Andover’s defence with only 5 minutes gone. Joe Smith’s shot from just inside the box forced a good save by the home keeper.

Andover pushed on. Another offside flag kept the score line from moving.

Ten minutes into the half Burpitt increased his tally for the season with a great goal cutting in from the wing and firing home. 3-1.

Andover weren’t finished. Ten minutes left and a quick break resulted in a goal for the home side. 3-2.

A nail biting finish was on the cards with Andover pressing for an equaliser. On a counter however Sam Farndell ran clear hammered a long range shot past an advancing keeper with 2 minutes left to finish the fixture.

Result 4-2
