Match Report Verwood Town vs Fleet Spurs 25-Mar-23

WESSEX LEAGUE DIVISION ONE
SATURDAY 25TH MARCH 2023
VERWOOD TOWN 5 FLEET SPURS 0

The first 15 minutes saw play contained in Spurs’ third. On 12 Kerr was floored just outside the area. Carswell’s FK hit defenders and scrambled clear. It was the nearest we had got to testing the keeper despite dominance so early in the game.

It was inevitable we would score. 14 minutes gone and Broad over lapped on the left sending a high cross into Spurs’ box. Mason’s header was acrobatically tipped over the bar by the keeper.

A minute later McWilliams obliged with a volley from the edge of the box ..1-0.

Spurs rallied but our defence was solid on the day and containing long balls hit mainly down the flanks.

Storey and Carswell dominated mid field sparking several attacks but we were again devoid of a finishing touch in front of the sticks.

Half way through the half Spurs had the ball in our net but their ‘goal’ was disallowed for offside.

The half finished 1-0

We carried on the second half as we left the first, on top and pressing. Sam Farndell epitomised our effort and direction collecting a Fishlock through ball and putting a well placed shot into the bottom corner. 2-0. Only a minute and a half had passed.

All credit to Spurs, they fought back from the re start and grabbed a corner. Their inswinger was cleared by Ponder finding Smith. Smith’s defence splitting pass found Farndell lurking on the edge of the Spurs box. A swivel and good shot hit the inside of the post and bounced back into the keeper’s hands.

Spurs persistent long ball game was easily dealt with by our back four and Phillips.

McWilliams and Mason were well on top of their markers. Storey slid a pass through the middle. McWilliams followed up but the keeper was out quickly to attempt a clearance. A topped ball went loose and Carswell chipped a sublime 30 yarder over the keeper giving us a 3-0 lead.

On came Broom for Carswell with 11 gone and his clearance from another long ball to Storey gave space for a Storey McWilliams link. McWilliams cut in from the left and fired a low shot for the corner of the net. The keeper’s knees got in the way of a McWilliams second.

We were now well on top and with ten minutes left a Fishlock cross field ball was collected by Mason. Mason’s marker was stranded. Result was an angled shot hitting the back of the net. 4-0.

Matthews came on for Broad and then Davies followed replacing Farndell.

Davies tried a 25 yarder shortly after coming on but it was Ringwood’s Meeting House that was hit by the ball.

4 minutes to go and it was the Isaac Storey show. A good run down the left created space and cutting in to the edge of the box, Storey fired home a low shot into the bottom corner. 5-0.

A nap hand supported by a clean sheet is our best of the season.

Result 5-0.
