Match Report Verwood Town vs Downton 27-Jan-24

VELOCITY WESSEX LEAGUE DIVISION ONE
SATURDAY 27TH JANUARY 2024
VERWOOD TOWN 0 DOWNTON 4

Downton pressed from the start. Ferguson and Broad blocked a couple of attacks down the flanks and Richardson intercepted a through ball in the area preventing the first possible shot on goal. Only two minutes had elapsed from the whistle.

Mitchell’s handling was tested from a corner with only 8 minutes gone and Forewaker cleared off the line as we wilted in the middle allowing central access. Davis luckily was on form and a series of balls floated into the area he headed clear.

We had a couple of efforts half way through the half with Haensel and King trying shots from just outside the box. The keeper remained untroubled.

Pressure continued through the half with Downton camping in our third.

We survived until 39 minutes gone and a free kick from the edge of the box was punched away from under the bar by Mitchell. The ball fell nicely on the edge of the area for a scissors kick to beat Mitchell making it 0-1.

A continued pressure until 45 minutes kept the play in and around our area but on the whistle the score remained 0-1.

Half Time 0-1.

The second half kicked off as a carbon copy of the first and for the first couple of minutes Downton pressed forward testing our defence. Mitchell Davis Ferguson and Broad were over employed.

The we enjoyed a period of good football with Downton on the receiving end of a flurry of attacks.

Pope came on for Forewaker on 52 minutes.

55 gone .. Richardson and Davis worked the ball through the middle and a sweeping Richardson pass found Broad galloping down the right. A good cross sped across the goal line. Whitelaw lunged but was fractionally short of diverting the ball into the net.

Haensel was next to try a shot but watched the ball emulate a NASA probe.

We pushed on but got caught against the run of play leaving ourselves exposed and a simple long ball and runner made it 0-2.

15 gone and Dibben came on for Ferguson. Dibben was immediately tested with an attack down Downton’s right but did well to take ball off toes on the edge of the box.

18 and Richardson benefitted from a Pope through ball collecting on the right and cutting in, dropped an inch perfect cross to Davis. A strong header went over the bar.

That was about it. We reverted to a first half time wilt and Downton ground out a third on 22 minutes. 0-3.

Our cross bar deflected two efforts and the post one as we defended deeply.

48 gone and a simple tap in made it 0-4.

Result 0-4
